Attachments and web search
Attach a file
Section titled “Attach a file”Click the + menu next to the composer and choose Attach file.
- Up to 5 files per message.
- Up to 30 MB each.
- Supported types: PDF, DOCX, XLSX, PPTX, CSV, TXT, JPG, JPEG, PNG, GIF, MD, JSON, XML, and WEBM.
Behind the scenes, files you attach are kept in a Chat knowledge collection belonging to that conversation — one of the three kinds of collection. That’s what lets Chat search and cite an attachment later in the thread, not just in the message you sent it with. If a file turns out to be worth keeping beyond this conversation, promote that collection to Personal.
Attaching a file in a shared conversation
Section titled “Attaching a file in a shared conversation”In a conversation that’s just yours, an attachment is just yours.
In a shared conversation, or any conversation inside a folder, it isn’t: for other people to see what the answer is based on, they need the file too. So attaching a file there shares it with everyone in the conversation.
Chat asks you first. Before the file is shared, you’ll get a confirmation prompt telling you it’s about to become available to everyone in that conversation. If the file shouldn’t travel that far, cancel — and attach it in a private conversation instead.
Once you confirm, each person’s access to that file matches the role they already have:

So a Viewer can read the file and see it cited, but can’t remove it or add more — exactly the access they have everywhere else in the folder. See Collection types and sharing for what each of those roles can do, and Folder members and roles for the folder side.
Search the web
Section titled “Search the web”Toggle Web, next to the + menu, to let Chat search current web pages before answering.
The toggle stays on for the rest of the conversation until you turn it off again — it’s a setting for the thread, not just your next message.
A reply that used web search is marked Web Enriched, with numbered citations to what it found. If a reply didn’t search the web and you think it should have, look for a Search the web button underneath it to re-run your question with search on.
